 Introduction - I started out writing a piece on human stupidity, not America’s Funniest Home Videos stupid, but rather the stupidity of humanity, because in case you haven’t noticed, we’re a sad, sad little species.
During the course of scribbling out the article, it began to build with one silly human situation after another – well over 5000 words later, the “article” was fast becoming a study for the New England Journal of Insanity.
Knowing that humans have an attention span of a house fly, I realized the long article would never be read all the way to the end - no matter how intriguing it all became. And thus, that’s why you’re stuck with the Series.
Forward - In order for humans to understand what I’m about to convey, one would have to be honest with themselves. It is inconceivable for any of us to not ignore the fact that the world has become a very silly place.
We, as a human race, stopped evolving a few thousand years ago and at this point in time we are simply getting stupider and stupider. We’ve over-stayed our welcome on this planet and we’ve asked for whatever pile o’ crap we get from it. This isn’t conspiracy theory shit or mindless drivel. All you have to do is look around.
We have no idea what we’re doing anymore. We run around this planet coming up with new and improved ways to be stupid. Are things getting “better”? No. Why? Because stupidity begets stupidity and it’s being sanctioned by stupid leaders. And this goes on while we ‘pretend’ everything’s cool, because when people around the world need help after an earthquake, we show up with our chests all puffed out; declaring that humanity at its greatest has struck again! And we will rejoice! ‘See, we care’, we will say.
We are so lost in our own crapulence; we now have commercials on television to show us how to be nice to one another and encouraging us to perform “a random act of kindness” every now and then. In twenty-ten, in a world over-run by religious zealots, you’d think we all have that one down by now. “The human emotion of ‘being nice’.” A lot of people choose not to.
Are we that audacious to think that our civilization of humankind is invincible? Other humanoids roamed this earth long before us and screwed up, ending their rule. One group in particular lasted about 1 million years. We should be so lucky.
We have become too ‘big for our britches’, as the old folks would say; our collective global ego far exceeding our realistic view of the actual world we live in.
The human psyche is rude, crass, and obnoxious. Our characters are aggressive, arrogant, vain and egotistical. Our personalities; deceitful, hateful and mean-spirited.
All of us are capable of inflicting extreme pain and we spend every waking minute guarding our emotions that can spark anything from an envious glare to an all out mass murder spree.
In our modern world, our emotional madness has become a part of our everyday life. We are so tied into each other that one person’s action will set off a series of the same action performed by others. In other words, when someone loses their noodles and shoots all their co-workers, the next day the same thing will happen again. A few days later, it will happen again.
The world has changed – we didn’t.
The only thing we have evolved with is that we make bigger and better killing devices. Oh yeah, we also make narlier toys. And that’s it. Big mother toys.
We have not changed mentally since we ate bugs a few million years ago. Sure we can talk better, write things down and figure things out for not just today, but also for tomorrow and that’s lovely and all, but big whoop-dee-doo.
We’ll still cheat, deceive and blow each other up at any moment. War we have down to a science. We have not learnt to communicate between the races properly as racism is evident everywhere. Minorities in “free” countries are treated unfairly. In most countries, women are treated like inferior creatures, and child labour runs rampant. A few countries have their people live in complete obscurity from the rest of the world. Corporations produce unhealthy killer food and inferior products. We pollute and crap up the planet faster than we’ve ever done before without bothering to wonder what’s going to happen?
How do we change the world? How do we convince the people at the top to change? How do we reset the clocks and try this again? We don’t. We don’t get to. What is – is. We have passed the point where all hope of real humanity on this planet is possible. Who’s to blame? People - that’s who.
We’ve allowed this to happen. We gave morons absolute power to govern and control us. We listened to their religious and political rants while we nodded in sheep-like trances. When they said “Jump”, we asked, “How high?”
We have lost the reason to why we are here on this planet; to enjoy its wonderment. Instead, it has become a race for the almighty dollar – without it, you’ve got squat. We are not “living”. Most of us are barely existing, some of us…not even that.
We can create things of fascination and at the very same time figure out how to screw others over it. All of our conquests, small, large and great, have been accomplished on the backs and deaths of others. This is humanity?
If we are to shrug our shoulders and say, “But that’s what it is to be human”, then perhaps our evolution to this stage was all an accident. Perhaps this planet was meant for all the other animals that are here. Maybe it was for them to enjoy since they don’t have to kill each other for something to do or because the sacred book said so. Nor do they know what racism is. Or hate. Maybe we aren’t supposed to be here - period.
Civilizations have come and gone since this round ball has been floating around space. Each time humankind has started over we’ve gone a little further down ‘Progression Road’. Maybe one of these times; we’ll finally figure it out.
In the end it may just take a global calamity to change the world and change our minds.
